A group photograph of railway workers with a “Shch” series locomotive in the background. It was taken in 1921. One person, N.I. Malev, is identified in the picture (first on the left in the second row) and there is an inscription that reads “Malev N.I. arestovan sent. 1938” [“N.I. Malyev, arrested April, 1938”]. On the reverse side we read “Pochemu ne doproshen Malev o tekh kto s nim sfotografirovan” [“Why was it that Malev was not questioned about the people who were photographed with him”] and “Fotokartochka moia, no snimok ne moi” [“The snapshot belongs to me, but I didn’t take the photograph”]. The photograph is on show in an exhibition in the Anzhero-Sudzhensk Municipal Local History Museum (on a stand entitled “Repression in the 1930s”).

Description of exhibitA black-and-white picture of a group of 69 people, with a “Shche” series locomotive in the background. 14 of the group are standing on the footplate of the locomotive. In the top left-hand corner of the photograph there is an inscription written in ordinary pencil: “Malev N.I. arestovan apr. 1938” [“Malev N.I., arrested April, 1938”]. Next to the inscription there is an asterisk, surrounded by a circle and from the circle downwards there is a line linking it to the first person on the left in the second row. On the back of the photograph there are notes in different handwriting styles: “Pochemu ne doproshen Malev o tekh kto s nim sfotografirovan” [“Why was it that Malev was not questioned about the people who were photographed with him”] and “Fotokartochka moia, no snimok ne moi” [“The snapshot belongs to me, but I didn’t take the photograph”].

Malev. It is not known who identified Malev, and under what circumstances they wrote “Malev N.I arestovan apr. 1938”] [“Malev, N.I. arrested April 1938”]. The origin of the notes on the back of the photograph “Pochemu ne doproshen Malev o tekh kto s nim sfotografirovan” [“Why was it that Malev was not questioned about the people who were photographed with him”] and in different handwriting “Fotokartochka moia, no snimok ne moi” [“The snapshot belongs to me, but I didn’t take the photograph”], is also unknown. In the exhibition (on the stand “Repression of the 1930s” ) the original photograph is on show, next to a photocopy of the reverse side.
