BiographyLev Platonovich Karsavin (b. St Petersburg 1882 - d. Abez' 1952), religious philosopher and medieval historian, Doctor of History (1916), Doctor of Theology (1918). Graduated from the Faculty of History and Philology of Petersburg University (1906), taught at the (Bestuzhevskii) Higher Education College for Women, the P.F. Lesgaft Higher Education College, and at the Neuropsychological Institute. From 1913 he worked as an extraordinary professor at Petersburg University, and from 1915 as an ordinary professor at the Institute of History and Philology. Treasurer of the Historical Society at Petrograd University. Worked at the newspapers “Vestnik Evropy” [“The European Herald"], “Golos minuvshego” ["Voice of the Past"], “Tserkovnyi Vestnik” [“The Church Herald"], “Istoricheskii Vestnik” [“The Historical Herald"] and others. One of the founders (1919) and subsequently Principal of the Workers' Faculty [Rabfak] of Petrograd University. Between 1918 and 1922 involved in a number of philosophical societies, worked with the publishers of "Nauka i shkola” [“Science and School"], and also on the anthologies “Feniks” ["Phoenix"] and "Strelets” [“Archer"]. He created an original religio-philosophical system in the area of the metaphysics of all-unity. Arrested on suspicion of counter-revolutionary activity, November 1922 sent out of the country on a so-called "Philosophers' Steamboat", lived in Berlin, then from 1926 in Paris. In 1925-1926 he was one of the ideologues of Eurasianism. From 1927 worked as a professor at Kaunas University (Lithuania). In 1940, after the incorporation of Lithuania into the USSR, he moved with the university to Vil'nius, and after being discharged from his teaching role became the director of the Vil'nius Museum of Art. Arrested on 9 July 1949, on 4 March 1950 sentenced 10 years imprisonment. In the camp (settlement of Abez', Komi ASSR) wrote a series of religio-philosophical essays. He died in the camp hospital on 20 July 1952.
