Necropolis /Common grave of remains of dekulakised special settlers
On 6 November 1992 the remains of dekulakised special settlers were re-buried in a common grave in the operating cemetery of the town Solvychegodsk (Kotlas region, Arkhangel oblast’). The re-burial was initiated by the Kotlas-based society “Sovest’” [“Conscience”] and had the support of the town administration. The remains of the 35 special settlers, who had been buried in a single grave, were discovered during the construction of a private house on the outskirts of town (house No.44 on Proletarskaia ulitsa). A monument with the inscription “Zhertvam peshikh etapov 30-kh godov” [“To the victims of the prisoner transit marches of the 1930s”], designed by A.M. Saburov, was placed on the grave on 13 August 1994. (Photograph late 1990s).

Detailed annotationOn 6 November 1992 the remains of dekulakised special settlers were re-buried in a common grave on the operating cemetery of the town Solvychegodsk (Kotlas region, Arkhangel oblast’). The re-burial was initiated by the Kotlas-based society “Sovest’” [“Conscience”], headed by I.A. Dubrovina, and had the support of the town administration. The remains of the 35 special settlers, who had been buried in a single grave, were discovered during the construction of a private house on the outskirts of town (house No.44 on Proletarskaia ulitsa) in August 1991. The owner of the house exhumed the remains himself and turned to the Kotlas-based society “Sovest’” for help. I.A. Dubrovina had part of the remains forensically analysed; the others were stored at the house of A.M. Saburov. According to I.A. Dubrovina, in the winter of 1930/1931 groups of dekulakised special settlers were made to walk from the assembly and transit station “Makarikha” in Kotlas up along the Vychegda river to places which had been assigned to them as settlements. The route went through the outskirts of Solvychegodsk. Those who died on the journey or during overnight stops at transit points were buried by local peasants in common graves. (No documentary evidence has been found apart from data on the high mortality during these transit marches). The results of the forensic analysis of the age of the burials in April 1992 showed that “the bodies could have been buried in 1930” (Deed of the Leningrad oblast’ forensic office from 20 April 1992). In August 1994 a monument with the inscription “Zhertvam peshikh etapov 30-kh godov” [“To the victim of the prisoner transit marches of the 1930s”], designed by A.M. Saburov, was placed on the grave, the monument was unveiled in a ceremony on 13 August 1994. There is an annual remembrance service on 30 October, in which the town administration participates.
