DescriptionThis rubric relates mostly to the section "Museum Exhibits". It is used for biographical materials that concern the life of a person before he or she came into contact with the machine of terror, i.e. photographs, documents and objects that relate to life before the arrest. In some cases this rubric can refer to objects from the section "Monuments", namely when the memorial sign or memorial plaque is dedicated to events that took place before a person's arrest and life in the Gulag, and when it does not mention any subsequent biographical episodes that are linked to the terror and the Gulag.

The rubric "Peaceful Life" only makes sense in combination with others. Any object attached to this rubric must be attached to other rubrics in the index that reflect key events in the subsequent life of that person and are linked to the terror and the Gulag: "The Camps", "Internal Exile and Special Settlements", "Execution" etc. The rubric "Arrest and Investigation" is used alongside the rubric "Peaceful Life" only in those cases when the arrest was not followed by a camp sentence, exile or execution (i.e. when the person died during the investigation or was released) or when their subsequent fate is unknown.
