The picture (“Winter Landscape”) by Marcel-Mariia Georgievna Koente (1898-1971) was drawn between 1950 and 1952, when she was in prison in Kargopol’ Camp (station Ertsevo, Arkhangel’sk oblast’) and was sent to Leningrad accompanied by a letter. In 2004, M.G. Koente’s daughter, Natalia Sergeevna Gabaeva (born 1930) gave the water-colour to the Museum of the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” in St Petersburg (Photo 05.09.2004).

Description of exhibitOriginal. Paper. Water-colours. A rural winter landscape is depicted in “landscape” orientation on a rectangular sheet of drawing-paper. In it there are several houses on rising ground and fences and wattle-fencing all covered in snow. The picture is framed.
 
State of preservationThe sheet is crumpled and there are several traces of soiling.
 
Detailed annotationThe picture (“Winter Landscape”) by Marcel-Mariia Georgievna Koente (1898-1977) was drawn in prison in Kargopol’ Camp (station Yertsevo, Archangel’sk oblast’) between 1950 and 1952. It was sent from the camp in a letter to her daughter, Natalia Sergeevna Gabaeva, who had remained in Leningrad after her mother’s arrest. The letter and the envelope have not been preserved. The picture was kept in the family. In 2004, N.S. Gabaeva presented to the Museum of the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” in St Petersburg her own memoirs and her mother’s drawings (postcards sent from Ertsevo, and sketches of theatrical costumes that had been brought out of the camp in Shilut.).
