Sketch of the title-page of “the Half- Yearly Report on the activity of the Technical Section of the Economics Department” of the Plenipotentiary Representation of the OGPU to the Leningrad Military District. It is dated 13.08.1932. It was drawn up by the imprisoned architect Nikolai Evgenevich Lansere (1879-1942) in the Internal OGPU prison in Leningrad, where he worked in the No.12 Special Technical Design Office. The drawing was brought out of the prison N.E.Lansere’s daughter, Natalia Nikolaevna Lansere (1910-1998), a civilian draughtswoman. In February, 1993, N.N. Lansere gave the drawing to the “Memorial” Research and Information Centre Museum (St Petersburg). (Photo 06.10.2004).

Description of exhibitOriginal. Tracing-paper, Indian Ink, Pencil. The sketch is done on a rectangular, portrait-orientated sheet of yellowing tracing-paper. In the top part of the sketch there is an inscription which reads: “PP OGPU LVO” which is done in red Indian Ink in sans serif writing and in 3 lines. A drawing of the coat-of-arms of the USSR has been inserted into the centre of the top line. In the centre of the drawing is the heading: "POLUGODOVOI OTCHET O DEIATEL'NOSTI TEKHNICHESKOGO OTDELENIIA EKONOMICHESKOGO OTDELA" [“HALF-YEARLY REPORT ON THE ACTIVITY OF THE TECHNICAL SECTION OF THE ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT”] done in yellow water-colour with pencil contours in sans serif writing in 6 lines. In the bottom part of the page there is a sketch, showing a a building in the process of construction and the construction tools in the foreground. The sketch is in a landscape-orientated rectangle and is done in grey and black water-colour. Below the sketch and right next to it is the date: “1932”. Some traces of pencil-marks are evident on the drawing. In the bottom right-hand corner there is a signature in pencil: “N. Lansere” and the date: “13 August, 1932”.
 
State of preservationThe tracing-paper is old and torn in places.
 
Detailed annotationThe sketch of a title-page of the “Half-yearly Report on the Activity of the Technical Section of the Economics Department” Plenipotentiary Representation of the OGPU in the Leningrad Military District. It was drawn up by the imprisoned architect N.E. Lansere (1879-1942) on 13.08.1932, during his time in the OGPU Internal Prison in Leningrad and while working in OKTB-12. Special Technical Design Office No.12 was in the Internal Prison of the OGPU PP in the Leningrad Region. It was involved in planning of the construction of the Bolshoi Dom (OGPU Headquarters) at No. 4, Liteinii Prospekt, the re-building of the OGPU garage, etc. It is not known whether this sketch was used in the design of the title-page of the final report. The sketch was brought out of OKTB-12 by L.N. Lansere’s daughter, Natalia Nikolaevna Lansere (1910-1998), who worked there as a civilian draughtswoman. The sketch remained in N.N. Lansere’s family archive and was given by her to the Research and Information Centre “Memorial”. It was shown in the exhibition "Iskusstvo Gulaga: Po obe storony tiuremnoi dveri" [“The Art of Russia: On Both Sides of the Prison Gates” ], jointly organised by the RIC "Memorial" and the Museum of the Political History of Russia called (St Petersburg, The Museum of the Political History of Russia, 30.10 – 29.12. 1995).
