A mirror in a self-made frame made out of tree-fungus. Made by an unidentified prisoner of the camp Ukhta-Izhemsk. It was given to Mariia L’vovna Kano (1908 - ?) a prisoner of this camp (camp section No.8, Vetlosian, between 1948 and 1955). After she was released from captivity, M.L. Kano kept the mirror as a souvenir of the camp. In 1994 she donated it to the Museum of the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” in St Petersburg. (Photo 15.11.2009).

Description of exhibitThe mirror is circular and is fastened to one of the sides of a piece of tree-fungus (probably glued into a previously hollowed out depression).

Detailed annotationA mirror in a self-made frame made out of tree-fungus. Made by an unidentified prisoner of the camp Ukhta-Izhemsk. It was given to Mariia L’vovna Kano (1908 - ?) in the camp section No.8 (Vetlosian). The exact year of its creation is not known (between 1948 and 1955). M.L. Kano used the mirror while a prisoner in UkhtIzhemLag up to 1956. After her release she kept it as a souvenir of the camp. In 1994, before emigrating, she donated the item to the Museum of the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” in St Petersburg. (Name of donor not recorded).
