Detailed annotationThe author of the painting is un unknown prisoner – there is no name on it. It is signed with the initials “M.S” [“M.C.” in Cyrillic] (it has not been possible to establish what the initials stand for). The picture was given to Elena L’vovna Vladimirova (1902-1962), a prisoner on the Kolyma. There is no information on the precise camp division in the Administration of the North-Eastern Corrective Labour Camps and on the year in which the picture was presented. It was probably presented no earlier than in March, 1945, since it is highly unlikely that E.L. Vladimirova was able to keep the picture during the time of her stay in the camp in 1945. However, neither was it presented later than the late 1940s, when E.L. Vladimirova was transferred to PeschanLag. When she was released E.L. Vladimirova took the picture with her and kept it in her personal possessions. According to her bequests, the bulk of her possessions were kept by the family of her friends and next-door-neighbours Iu.B. Liuba and I.E.Gefroits. (Other documents and materials were bequeathed to various other friends). In the period 1987-1991 Iu.B. Liuba prepared several volumes of verse and poetry written by E.L. Vladimirova and conducted a correspondence with her friends and acquaintances from the camps. In November, 1990, he gave some of the documents that had belonged to Vladimirova to the Magadan Local History Museum. After Iu.B. Liuba’s death, his widow I.E. Gedroits gave the rest of the possessions remaining in their family to the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” (St Petersburg).
