Description of exhibitAn album in a home-made calico binding, stitched along the spine with a cord plaited from 2 strings with tassels on the ends. Initially these cords would have been a mixture of green and a lighter colour (possibly yellow). A wooden panel is fixed to the front cover of the album and on it there is a picture of a woman who is genuflecting. She is shown on a background of a country landscape, which is framed by a garland of stylized oak-leaves. On the back cover there is also a wooden panel: there is a drawing of a scroll framed by a garland of oak-leaves with a quotation from the poetry of Iu. Maironisa: “Kur béga Šešupé, / Kur nemunas teka / Ten mūsu Téviné / Graži Lietuva / Maironis.” [“ Where the Sheshupe runs, where the Neman flows, there is our Fatherland, the beautiful Lithuania. Maironis.] Pictures are drawn using a wood-carving technique and the text is done in poker-work. There are four metal rivets in the corners of the panel. On the opening page of the album there is a handwritten inscription in blue ink, which reads: Vardo dienoj! Aleksandrai – Petras / Uchta, 1955 m balandžio m. 17 d. [Congratulations on your Name Day! To Aleksandra from Petras/Ukhta, 1955, 17 April]. The remaining pages of the album are blank.

State of preservationUndamaged. The paper has yellowed.

Detailed annotationA home-made album with artistically designed wooden covers and a congratulation inscribed “Congratulations on your Name Day”. This is dated 17th April, 1955. The album was made by Piatras-Kazis Ilgunas (born 1918), a political prisoner, while he was in the UkhtIzhemLag and it was sent as a gift to Aleksandra Bogusaite (1915-1986), a political prisoner who was in exile. Piatras-Kazis’ father – Piatras Ilgunas (born 1891) and Aleksandra Bogusaite had met while they were in prison in the Uvil’dinsk Corrective Labour Colony in Chelyabinsk oblast'. Pyatras Ilgunas (the “Little Old Man”) had arrived in the camp before A. Bogusaite, and he “took her under his wing.” After his release Piatras Ilgunas went back to Lithuania. A. Bogusaite struck up a correspondence with his son, Piatras-Kazis, who was imprisoned in the UkhtIzhemLag. After their return to Lithuania in 1956, the album was kept by the family of A. Bogusaite and her husband, A. Dambrauskas. After Bogusaite’s death and then the death of Dambrauskas, Agota Nauialene, a woman who had looked after him and also a former political prisoner, gave his manuscripts to the Maironis Museum in Vilnius and other items to the Druskinikai Museum of Resistance and Deportation.
