Museum exhibit /Mug
Aluminium mug with the inscription “Varkuta/50-55 m. / Kašeta. Z. / O.L.P.-59" was presented to the Museum of Resistance and Deportation in the 1990s by a political prisoner, Zenonas Kašeta. Kašeta had inscribed a contemporary mug in order to represent daily life in a camp – he had used a mug of the same type in the period 1950-1955, when he was a prisoner in the camp division No.59 in Vorkuta. In the Museum, the mug is exhibited as an authentic item from the Vorkuta Camp. (Photo 24.08.2008).

Detailed annotationThis mug with the inscription “Varkuta/50-55 m./ Kašeta. Z. /O.L.P.-59" was given to the Museum of Resistance and Deportation in the 1990s by the former political prisoner Zenonas Kašeta. It is likely that Z. Kašeta bought the mug and wrote the inscriptions on it before giving it to the Museum. The creation of this artefact was probably inspired by a desire to show what everyday life was like in the camp – “this was exactly the kind of mug I used in the camp”. The mug is on display in the Museum as an authentic item from Vorkuta, with a label that reads: “An aluminium tankard belonging to Zenonas Kašeta. Vorkuta, Lagpunkt No.59, 1950-1955”.
