A carved wooden box. First half of the 1950s. It was made by Piatras-Kazis Ilgunas (born 1918), a political prisoner in UkhtIzhemLag (Komi ASSR) as a present for another political prisoner Aleksandra Bogusaite (1915-1986), who was in exile in Spassk Settlement, Karaganda oblast'. Symbols of Lithuanian independence are carved on the lid – the Gediminas Tower and the “Iron Wolf” and on the base of the box there is: “Aleksandrai Petras. Uchta 1954-X-28”. It is kept in the Museum of Resistance and Deportation (Druskininkai). A former political prisoner, Agota Nuialene, gave the box to the Museum. (Photograph 2008). Description of exhibit | A carved wooden box. The following is carved in the lid: the Gediminas Tower and an “Iron Wolf” – a symbol of Lithuanian independence, surrounded by a ribbon and a garland of oak-leaves. Onto the internal surface of the lid has been glued a carved panel with an inlay – “Vitis” (Horseman, “Chase” also surrounded by a garland of oak-leaves. On the base of the box, on the outside, there is a carved inscription that reads: “Aleksandrai/Petras/Uchta. 1954-X-28” |
State of preservation | The varnish has been rubbed off. There is a crack running along the lid, and there are several small cracks in the base. |
Detailed annotation | A carved wooden box. First half of the 1950s. It was made by Piatras-Kazis Ilgunas (born 1918), a political prisoner in the UkhtIzhemLag (Komi ASSR) and sent as a present to another political prisoner, Aleksandra Bogusaite (1915-1986), who was then in exile in Spassk Settlement, Karaganda oblast'. The symbols of Lithuanian independence are carved into the lid: the Gediminas Tower and the “Iron Wolf”. The inscrption on the base of the box is 28.10.1954. Piatras-Kazis’s father – Piatras Ilgunas (born 1881) and Aleksandra Bogusaite had met in prison in the Uvil’dinsk Corrective Labour Colony in Chelyabinsk oblast'. Piatras Ilgunas, who had arrived in the camp before A. Bogusaite, took her under his “sponsorship”. After his release Piatras Ilgunas left for Lithuania. A. Bogusaite corresponded with his son, Piatras-Kazis, who was imprisoned in UkhtIzhemLag. The box was kept by the family of A. Bogusaite’s and her husband, A. Dambrauskas. After Bogusaite’s death, and then the death of Dambrauskas, Agota Nauialene, the woman who had looked after him, who was also a former political prisoner, gave his manuscripts to the Maironis Museum in Vilnius, and she gave the various objects he had left to Druskininkai Museum of Resistance and Deportation. |
