Museum exhibit /Capsule for a “ksiva” (secret note) with a chronicle of Camp VS 389/36.
A capsule for a “ksiva” (secret note) made in 1985 in Camp VS 389/36 (Kuchino village, Chukovsk region, Perm oblast’) by the political prisoner Grigorii Zinov’evich Isaev (born 1943) for the political prisoner Rostislav Borisovich Evdokimov (born 1950). Evdokimov put a “ksiva” containing a chronicle of the Camp for 1985 (cf “Ksiva with a chronicle of the Camp VS 389/36; No.KP-126”) in the capsule and placed it in a hiding-place inside the camp zone. In 1992, during a reunion of former prisoners in Perm, Evdokimov extracted the capsule from the hiding-place and donated it to the Museum of the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” in St Petersburg. Detailed annotationA capsule for a “ksiva” (secret note), made by Grigorii Zinovevich Isaev in 1985 in the camp VS- 389/36 in Perm, at the request of Rostislav Borisovich Evdokimov for the purpose of concealing a “ksiva” containing a Chronicle of the VS-389/36 Camp for 1985 and illegally smuggling it outside the camp. The political prisoner G.Z. Isaev, an engineer by profession, worked as a lathe-operator and milling-machine-operator and fulfilled similar requests for his camp contemporaries. The size, shape and design of the capsule were dictated by the way it was concealed (it was hidden in the anal passage during a search before and after a meeting). After several unsuccessful attempts to transfer the capsule out of the camp (Evdokimov had his right to receive visits from his mother revoked) and fearing it would be confiscated, in spring 1986 Evdokimov hid the capsule with the “ksiva” within the camp zone. On 13th July, 1992, during a reunion of prisoners in the former Perm-36 Camp (07-12.07.1992, organised by V.V.Iofe, A.M.Kalikh and V.A. Shmyrov), R.B. Evdokimov publicly revealed the hiding-place and took out the capsule. The capsule was immediately and solemnly transferred to the Museum of the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” in St Petersburg. The disclosure of the hiding-place, the removal of the capsule and its handing over to V.V. Iofe were recorded on video-tape by T.F.Kosinova.
