Description of exhibitA wooden box with a lid loosely fixed with two small nails, inserted into the sides. Decorated with carving which is partially emphasized with poker-work. On the lid there is a picture showing swans that is bordered by a framework of branches and leaves. On the front side of the box there are birds in flight with trees as a framework. On the three remaining sides there is a landscape (showing trees on the sea-shore). On the inside of the lid, in the centre, a picture of a sailing boat has been burned in, and in the left- and right-hand top corners the inscriptions “1947” and “URAL” have been burned into the wood. In the bottom left-hand corner is a heavy inscription in blue ball-pen that reads: “To Gornushkina/Rudakovskaia / Kseniia. 6.02.1914”. In the bottom right-hand corner there is an inscription written with the same ball-pen: “Nyroblag”.

State of preservationThere is a crack in the lid repaired in amateur fashion, using insulating-tape.

Detailed annotationA home-made wooden box made by an unknown prisoner in NyrobLag (Molotovskii Region, Perm’ oblast') in 1947 and given to Ksenia Kharlampievna Gornushkina (1914-1991) by prisoner friends. The box is decorated with carving and poker-work patterns. On the inside of the lid there is a picture of a sailing-boat and the inscriptions “1947” and “Ural”. K.Kh. Gornushkina used the box when she was in prison – first in NyrobLag (1947-1948), then in TaishetLag (1948-1952), and then in exile in Krasnoyarsk Region (1952-1955). After her release, she used it in Taishet (1955-1962) and then, from 1962 onwards, in Leningrad. After K.Kh. Gornushkina’s death the box stayed in her family’s possession. In 1995 it was given to the Museum of the Research and Information Centre “Memorial” (St Petersburg) by her husband, Evgenii Aleksandrovich Rudakovskii (1913-post-1995). Before he gave the box to the Museum (probably in 1995), E.A. Rudakovskii inserted an inscription in ball-pen on the inside of the lid: “To Gornushkina/Rudakovskaia/Kseniia. 6.02.1914” and “Nyroblag”.
(06.12.1914 is K.X. Gornushkina’s date of birth). It was probably then that the amateur repairs were carried out.
