Description of museumThe Sosnogorsk Historical and Memorial Local History Museum (Sosnogorsk town, Komi Republic) opened in 1990 at the instigation of the local administration. The topic of the Gulag was represented in the main collection soon after the foundation of the Sosnogorsk-branch of the “Memorial” society in April 1992. The collection on the history of the Gulag is based on exhibits that were collected from local inhabitants; a major part of the objects relating to the everyday life of prisoners (a bread tin, crockery, a kerosene lamp etc) were collected during the expedition to Izhma (1992). Moreover, a number of exhibits were contributed by public organisations: the search parties of students from school No. 3 and the youth group “Tropoi pamiati” [“Along Memory’s Path”] from Vis settlement, Sosnogorsk region. The permanent exhibition shows: a map of UkhtpechLag, everyday objects from camp life and photographs. The exhibition “Memorial Sosnogorsk” tells visitors about the activities of the Sosnogorsk “Memorial” society (meetings of former prisoners, erection of a memorial to the victims of political repression, etc.) and about the fate of the society’s members who were formerly camp inmates. Also on display are exhibits from G.I. Ustilovskii's collection: some personal photographs, documents and books presented by him to the Museum. There have been several temporary exhibitions on honorary citizens of Sosnogorsk, including materials relating to the former prisoner Mikhail Fedorovich Aksiuta (2003). The exhibition “Risunki za koliuchei provolokoi” [“Drawings Behind Barbed Wire”] showed works by the PechorLag prisoners N.A. Miller and R.V. Godovants.
Exhibits relating to the Gulag are stored with the general collection, where they are allocated to different storage categories. Documentary material is classed according to themes and personalities. In 2009 the Museum received the collection of the museum of the settlement of Vis.
