Photograph of a hotel under construction in Segezha Settlement in the Medvezhegorsk region of the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, taken on 26.09.1937. The construction and finishing work was carried out by women prisoners of the Segezha corrective labour camp. The photographs of the construction of the Segezha Cellulose and Paper Plant and the town of Segezha were taken by a special section of the photography bureau of the NKVD BelBaltLag (the White Sea-Baltic Corrective Labour Camp). The results were used for inspection albums with a chronological photographic record of the construction of Segezha. The photograph was given to the “Segezha Municipal Museum Centre” in 1985. It came from the Room of Military and Labour Glory of the Segezha Cellulose and Paper Plant as part of an inspection album covering the period 1936-1938.

Description of exhibitA black-and-white photograph of a four-storey brick building under construction. It is photographed at an angle. On the façade there are
36 apertures for balconies and windows (nine on each floor). On the end wall there are four apertures for windows (one for each floor), located in the centre of each wall, one above the other. In front of the building there is scaffolding made of boards and also some builder’s rubble.

Detailed annotation“Hotel of the Segezha Settlement” – a photograph from an album entitled “Inspection Album of the photographic record of Segezhstroi No 1”, taken on 26.09.1937 in the settlement of Segezha in the Medvezhegorsk region of the Karelian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The photographs of the construction of the Segezha Cellulose and Paper Plant and the town of Segezha were taken by a special section of the photography bureau of the NKVD BelBaltLag. The author is unknown. At present the building (address: Segezha, Grazhdanskaia ul. 6) houses the hotel “Vyg”. The construction and finishing work was carried out by women prisoners of the Segezha corrective labour camp, including some who had been sentenced in 1938 as “family members of traitors to the fatherland”. One of them was N.V. Vsesviatskaia (1907-1974). The photo’s caption in the album reads “No 424/595. Gostinitsa. 26/IX-37g.” (the number refers to the number of the negative but the whereabouts of the negative are not known). The photograph was given to the “Segezha Municipal Museum Centre” in 1985. It came from the Room of Military and Labour Glory of the Segezha Cellulose and Paper Plant as part of the “Inspection Album of the photographic record of Segezhstroi No 1”.
