“Rehabilitated”. A self-portrait of N.I. Getman, 1978. Canvas, Oil. A genuine certificate of rehabilitation is fixed to the canvas. Nikolai Ivanovich Getman (1917-2004) was an artist. He was the author of a series of paintings called “The GULAG through the eyes of an artist” (1953-2004). In the period 1946 to 1953 he was a prisoner in TaishetLag and then in SevVostLag. After his release in 1953 he lived in the Yagodnoye Settlement in Magadan oblast', and then in Magadan. In 1976 he moved to Oryol. He was rehabilitated in 1991. In the period 2002-2004 he was the principal artist of the State Museum of the History of the Gulag (Moscow). The picture was given to the Museum by the artist in 2003. It is on permanent exhibition (Photograph 25.06.2010).

Description of exhibitA full-length portrait of a middle-aged man. His face is covered in grey stubble and he is wearing a cap with ear-flaps. He is seated on a swing made out of planks and barbed wire. He is wearing a grey shirt, unbuttoned down to the waist, torn grey trousers and heavy boots. He is holding a document with a seal on it (a genuine certificate of rehabilitation is fixed to the canvas). Next to his right leg is an upturned wooden board with “BANNED ZONE”, written in red on it, the whole surrounded by barbed wire. A barracks, some camp watch towers and a big hill (probably a slag-heap) can be seen in the background. The artist’s signature is in the bottom left-hand corner.

Detailed annotation“Rehabilitated”. A self-portrait of N.I. Getman, 1978. Canvas, Oil. A genuine certificate of rehabilitation is fixed to the canvas. Nikolai Ivanovich Getman (1917-2004) was an artist. He is the author of a series of paintings called “The GULAG through the eyes of an artist” (1953-2004). N.I. Getman was given a 10-year labour camp sentence in January 1946 (for “anti-Soviet agitation and propaganda”). He served his time in TaishetLag and SevVostLag. He was released in August, 1953 and spent his internal exile Yagodnoye Settlement, in Magadan oblast', where he had the job of artist in the House of Culture. In 1959 he obtained permission to move to Magadan. He was one of the people who set up the Magadan Section of the Arts Fund of the RSFSR and the creative workshop of the Magadan Organization of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR. He moved to Oryol in 1976 and was rehabilitated in 1991.From 1992 he was the President of the Oryol Regional Association of the Victims of Political Repression. From 2002 to 2004 he was the Principal Artist of the State Museum of the History of the Gulag (Moscow).The picture was given to the Museum by the artist on 4.12.2003. It is on permanent exhibition.
