Medvezhegorsk Municipal Museum of Local Lore and History
In 1999 the Museum inaugurated its permanent exhibition ‘The White Sea Canal. Milestones of History’.

The exhibition is based on documents, photo material and exhibits, recalling the construction of the White Sea Canal. The material was collected during expeditions by Museum staff, members of the Petrosavodsk branch of ‘Memorial’, and the administration of the Canal. In addition the Museum collected personal documents from inhabitants of settlements near the locks, as well as from participants of the Remembrance Day in Sandormokh. Research at the archives of the White Sea Canal’s administration, state archives of Karelia Republic and at private archives of former workers of the White Sea Canal in the late 1990s also contributed to collection. The collection contains both material on the history of the White Sea Canal and on the mass executions of prisoners in nearby Sandormokh.

The exhibition is constantly being renewed and enlarged.

The Museum offers lectures and discussion groups on its premises. Staff created video material on the Canal’s construction, which can be used by schools in the Medvezhegorsk district. An analogous audiovisual series is in preparation.
